More than half of the entire population of the city of Nairobi live in informal settlements, sometimes called slums. Carlile College opened its Centre for Urban Mission in the heart of Kibera slum in 2003. The Centre offers a variety of training programmes for pastors and church leaders who live and work in the informal settlements.
Our vision is to see the transformation of informal settlements through the ministry of the local church, so we are passionate about equipping Christian leaders to make a difference in their churches and communities. The Centre for Urban Mission seeks to take the context of the informal settlements seriously and has developed an approach to training that wants to both learn from and respond to the challenges of the informal settlements. We believe that it is impossible to engage seriously with the context of the informal settlements from suburbia.
