Placements

You may have hit this web site because you are someone from outside of Africa whom God is calling into mission. We’re convinced that Carlile College is a great place to engage in mission training wherever God is leading you. However, we think we have something very special to offer if you expect to be coming to work in Africa, or if God is calling you to work in a context of urban poverty wherever that might be in the world.

Carlile College and the Centre for Urban Mission welcome placement students from Bible Colleges and mission agencies around the world. We offer the opportunity for you to join our existing programmes for a term of study, focusing particularly on modules relating to mission and contextualisation. We recommend that all placement students join classes in the Centre for Urban Mission for at least one day per week, even if you are not expecting to work in a context of urban poverty in the longer term. The reason that we make this recommendation is because we believe that by joining classes in the Centre for Urban Mission you will engage with an exciting new approach to theological training. The tools that you will be exposed to will help you to contextualise the gospel wherever God is calling you to work. In addition to classes in the Centre for Urban Mission, we can select other courses that have a special focus on Christian ministry in Africa and on African Theology.

A central part of the placement experience is the opportunity to live in close fellowship with other students who are studying at Carlile College – men and women who are drawn from all over Eastern Africa. In the long term you will probably gain much more from these friendships than from anything else we have to offer. Single placement students will live in accommodation on the College compound. We will arrange for married students to live as close to the College as possible.

Crossing cultural barriers is a challenging and exhausting experience that requires positive levels of support. The College will provide placement students with a mentor who will offer the support needed to help you make the most of your time with us. Your mentor will either agree a learning contract with you or will work with a learning contract agreed with your sponsoring institution.

For those of you who might not be able to join us for a whole academic term, we are pleased to tailor a programme for you that will meet your needs. We also welcome requests from Colleges and institutions to develop specific programmes for groups of your students who are seeking placement experience.

If you would like to explore the possibility of a placement at Carlile College, please discuss with your mission leadership and contact us by e-mail through placements@carlilecollege.org We would be pleased to send you information about a variety of options that are available and to advise you of the costs involved.
